Gel polish and acrylic are often compared as if they were competitors, but they solve different problems. Gel is a flexible coating painted over your natural nail — it adds colour and shine without much bulk. Acrylic is a sculpting material that builds structure and length onto the nail, which is why it suits short, bitten or uneven nail beds so well.
Understanding that distinction is the fastest way to decide. If your goal is a durable, glossy finish on nails you are happy with, gel is usually the answer. If you want to add length, reshape the nail or protect a nail that keeps breaking, acrylic does something gel simply cannot.
Durability and Wear Time
A well-applied gel manicure typically holds its edge for around three weeks before growth and wear start to show. Acrylic sets, by comparison, are usually refilled every two to three weeks but can stay on the nail for months when maintained. The trade-off is maintenance: gel is removed and reapplied more often, while acrylic needs a refill as the natural nail grows out.
Neither material is “stronger” in the abstract. The right answer depends on your nail health, your daily routine and how much length you want.
What It Really Costs Over a Year
Looking at a single price tag rarely tells the full story. A gel manicure tends to cost less per visit but is re-done more frequently, while an acrylic set costs more to start and is topped up with cheaper refills. Most of our clients find the annual spend is closer than they expected — the real difference is how much time they want to spend in the chair.
